Good Point

From the Prof:
Dean Baker adds this perspective: One infuriating feature of business reporting is the constant cheering for a higher stock market. I have nothing against a higher market, but I know of no general public interest in a high stock market. In principle, the stock market represents the discounted value of the future profits of corporate America. If the value rises because the economy can now be seen as growing more rapidly, then this is certainly good news. But, if future profits are projected to be higher because of lower wages or lower corporate taxes (e.g. a higher tax burden on workers or fewer public services), why should the mass of the population, who own little or no stock celebrate?...

Catblogging

From Atrios: Farewell to Grover He had a long and good life. grover.jpg In the far distant future, cats will evolve and tell each other stories of the race of wacky gods that ushered in their time as masters of the world. They will have a devil too, "Ushkrowft". On Fridays they will publish pictures of themselves though they won't exactly know why or how such a tradition began. nyclept | 09.30.06 - 10:23 am |

Living Under the Tudors???

Matt Wilbert, commenting on Brad DeLong's blog about our newly sanctioned endorsement of torture and rejection of the tradition of habeas corpus: "Have to drag out this exchange from "A Man for All Seasons" William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law! Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that! Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake! I never expected to live under the Tudors.
